Go Hiking it's Good for You!

For this week’s blog, we are going to talk about how to get active off-campus. It’s important to know that your weekly workout routine doesn’t have to consist of just staying on campus. Let’s talk about one of my favorite activities off-campus which is hiking.

Stevenson University is luckily geographically placed in a perfect location to make hiking very accessible. From Patapsco State Park to Liberty Reservoir, Stevenson has plenty of hiking spots within a 30-minute radius. But why is hiking a good workout?

Why is Hiking a Good Workout

Hiking isn’t hard and it doesn’t require anything besides a trail. Three main things go into hiking that makes it an amazing workout for anybody. Those things are speed, elevation, and distance.

First is speed. The speed of your hike can determine how quickly you want to burn calories. When your hiking it’s not about being fast or slow. It is all about maintaining the same speed throughout the whole hike.

Hiking by the BayAs long as you keep a consistent speed the elevation and distance will do the rest of the work for you. Since hiking involves large elevations changes quickly you will be struggling with staying at a good pace. But this is good because the more you push through trying to stay on pace the more calories you will burn.

The final element to the hike is the distance. The distance is the last factor in how vigorous a workout your hike will be. The longer distance you hike and the more you push yourself will equal more calories burned.

Why I Go Hiking

After all, this hiking may seem very intense but it is only as intense as you make it. Hiking isn’t just a good workout it’s a great way to clear your mind and explore. Hiking is a fun way to get active and enjoy the outdoors.

I go hiking once or twice a week. The reason I do it is that I love exploring the outdoors and I get a good workout while doing it. If you’re looking to get a good workout off-campus and a way to clear your mind and explore a little I would highly recommend incorporating hiking into your weekly workout routine.
